Architectural firm goStudio revealed plans to install an outdoor sauna at a scenic spot in the middle of Union Bay, Seattle.
The sauna is expected to be set afloat in the bay this summer if the firm receives its Kickstarter funding. The structure, equipped with an efficient wood-burning stove, will be accessible by kayak from the city.
The 2.4 by 2.4 meter unit is built upon a 2.4 by 4.9 meter platform. The entire structure is kept afloat by 28 55-gallon air-filled floatation barrels. An external ladder provides access to an second deck with a diving board.
“We thought it would be interesting to propose a floating sauna for Seattle, a city surrounded by water,” Aimée O’Carroll, co-founder and architect at goCstudio, said in a Gizmag report. “The purpose of the sauna is to create a place of refuge for locals, to give them a new perspective on their city and provide a space to relax and reinvigorate out on the water.”
O’Carroll and her business partner Jon Gentry became interested in floating structures after they designed the Spirit Pavilion in a competition based on the creative re-use of Seattle’s SR-520 floating bridge.
goStudio would need to raise $15,000 to launch this project. The campaign is set to be launched in a few weeks.
